Project Overview
Located on former military training grounds, the Lieberose Solar Park is a perfect example of a marriage between clean energy and environmental conservation. Creation of the solar facility spurred the cleanup of land mines, grenades, and munitions littering the site. When the First Solar modules reach the end of their lifespan, they will be collected and recycled at no cost, leaving the land free of waste and one step closer to the region’s conservation goals.
Project Benefits
The project produces approximately 53 kilowatt-hours of clean electricity per year, powering about 15,000 local homes and preventing 35,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide from being released into the atmosphere each year.
Community Commitment
The creation of the project prompted the environmental cleanup of the area. Multiple tons of land mines, grenades, and other munitions waste were removed. After serving more than 20 years as a solar power generation facility, the installation will be dismantled and First Solar will collect and recycle the modules at no charge to the project owner. The land will be free of inherited waste, serving the region's conservation goal.
